Ah, German, I love you so much. Sure, you can be almost impossible for me to pronounce at times, you have all those funny letters, and people mumble you so quickly I can't tell what they're saying nearly ever, but you also have the funniest phrases.
My 'word of the day' email came up with this little gem as part of the 'use the word in a sentence' exercise: 'Du abgenommen hast'. The word itself isn't sticking in my head, but the phrase means 'you have lost weight'. Abgenommen apparently means 'removed', 'abgenommen hast' apparently means 'have taken', and all together it means 'you've lost weight'.
The part that I'm secretly chuckling over, however, is that when somebody first said this to me I thought she was saying that I'd been nomming on things. Not quite the intention, I'm sure!
